<image:caption>A photographic series by Van Sowerwine and Isobel Knowles commissioned for STAGES: A photographic response to the pandemic, Monash Gallery of Art, Victoria. Each of us built a set of the room we spent most of our lockdown time in. The objects and furniture which served as our predominant landscape became so hauntingly familiar. We constructed these miniatures from memory rather than our usual fastidious studying and measuring, limiting ourselves to materials we already had. Each of these spaces is also the place from which we looked out into the rest of the world. As an artistic duo with an animation practice and a shared studio we are used to spending large amounts of time in the same room. These two spaces were all we saw of each other’s lives for most of the year. Image: The world came rushing in (2021)</image:caption>

<image:caption>1987, Earthenware This work was created for the late Adrian Knowles. Maureen describes this one and the Alligator Pot as her “two best pots I’ve ever made” in a letter to Mr Knowles. She says "I had to learn how to draw horses (they're such a funny shape) to be able to paint this one, which accounts for its legs being somewhat out of kilter." She said of the peacocks, "They were a bit dull so I slapped some real gold lustre on them (18 carat I suppose) and brightened them up a bit." And a PS, " The pot is made of some very special white clay I had made up by the manufacturer. It's the first pot EVER fired from it."</image:caption>

      <image:title>Maureen Watts Pots - Family Vase</image:title>
<image:caption>1988, Earthenware Maureen loved painting people and families. There are many significant pieces she made over the years that are painted from photographs of people grouped together in a pose. These family moments made permanent as ceramic objects gives them gravitas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1988, 1989, Earthenware These two Toby Jugs are part of a series of similar characters. Maureen kept these two because they were portraits of people she knew. The woman is Wendy who worked on the cashier at the Daylesford supermarket and the man is her boss, Mr Clough, who owned the supermarket and afforded us all kinds of concessions in times of need. They were both always cheerful and generous.</image:caption>

<image:title>Maureen Watts Pots - Suzannah and the Elders</image:title>
<image:caption>1988, Earthenware Maureen often used ceramics as a storytelling device. This jug tells the story of Suzannah and the Elders from the Book of Daniel. Suzannah is spied on by lecherous powerful men of her community. When she refuses their advances, they unsuccessfully try blackmailing her, then they publicly accuse her of adultery whereby she is sentenced to death. Young Daniel cross-examines the men who describe conflicting trees at the scene of the ‘crime’ so are found to have lied. Suzannah’s name is cleared and instead the Elders are sentenced to death.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2020, Linocut From the collection, Distinguishing Marks. "Last year I received a diagnosis of breast cancer for my birthday. After hitting the gin with my stalwart friend Jill, I felt as if I had the whole business under my belt and could get on with the projects I had in hand. Not true. Every night for a week or so, I found myself lying in bed at night absolutely rigid with a deep sense of impending doom. Dread. It grips you, smothers you and won’t let go. This print is about that experience. It doesn’t come close, but might, if it were at least twenty metres square and accompanied by booming, screeching sound effects."</image:caption>

<image:caption>2020, Linocut Not since giving birth have I been obliged to expose so much of my body to strangers. Bright lights shining a spotlight on my flabby bits, being photographed inside and out … Horrible. What could I say? Do you want just a little peek or the full frontal? Have you ever met a nipple quite like this one? Ah well, my only consolation was that I’d lived in this body quite a long time and frankly, like an old car, it showed its mileage.</image:caption>

It was a really beautiful morning with the sun rising over the hill and shining through the mist drifting off the paddocks. 'Let me take a photo of your last day with two breasts.' So it was out of the car and a photo-shoot on the road with that lovely morning as a backdrop. I am so lucky to have a daughter who knows how to melt stress and fear right off the bone with humour and love."</image:caption>

Crowds of little bottle people would always be on sale at the markets in Daylesford in the 80s, each one a different face waiting to be recognised as a doppelgänger of someone’s aunt or nephew.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Maureen Watts - Suzannah and the Elders</image:title>

<image:caption>2014, Crochet lace These phenomenal crocheted lace panels tell the story of light becoming flesh becoming spirit as told through the eyes of the humble sardine. The first panel is phytoplankton photosynthesising light into matter. The second panel is a feeding frenzy of sardines eating plankton, turning matter into flesh. The third panel shows birds eating the sardines and returning to the skies, returning the spririt of the sardine to light. Each panel took over 450 hours to create. These panels will continue to be accessible to the public after the exhibition in the Glenelg Shire Council Collection.</image:caption>
